Care work is one of the most important jobs in the country, and one of the most misunderstood. Before you apply anywhere — including with us — here is the honest picture.
What the job actually is.
In home care, you travel between people's homes supporting them to live the lives they choose. One visit might be helping someone wash and dress with dignity. The next might be preparing lunch and sharing it. The one after that, prompting medication and noticing that something seems off — and acting on it. You are part practical support, part company, part early-warning system.
What's genuinely good about it.
The relationships are real. You matter to the people you support in a way few jobs offer. The work is active and varied, no two days repeat, and the career ladder is genuine: plenty of registered managers — including our founder — started on the front line. You do not need experience or qualifications to start; values and reliability count for more.
What's genuinely hard about it.
Early starts and evening visits, because that is when people need help getting up and going to bed. Travel between visits, often in your own car. Days that ask a lot of you emotionally. And you will lose people you have come to care about. Anyone who recruits you without saying these things is not being straight with you.
What a good employer looks like.
Paid travel time, not just contact time. Paid, proper training — induction aligned to the Care Certificate, shadowing before you work alone. Rotas that respect that you have a life. Answers, not evasion, when you ask about pay. Ask every employer these questions at interview; their reaction tells you everything.
Two protections to know before you apply anywhere.
First, no recruiter may ever charge you a fee for finding you work — it is unlawful in the UK. Second, be wary of anyone guaranteeing visa sponsorship; only licensed employers can sponsor, rules change frequently, and no honest recruiter makes guarantees.
